Background

On Sunday July 9, 2017, six nervous yet excited children arrived at Camp Twin Lakes in Rutledge, Georgia, with their jittery parents in tow.  However, these campers were not the typical children attending summer camp.  None had ever been to an overnight camp, or even been away from their caregivers for a single night.  Camp Trach Me Away, Georgia’s first and only overnight camping program for children with tracheostomies provides a fun and medically safe environment for children ages 7-18 who wish to experience summer camping.  In Georgia, there are over 250 children with tracheostomies.  Children with tracheostomies require exceptional care that often prevents them from participating in summer camps.
